Actions and Updates in Albany

#OAbanner
WaterOnFire

With an unprecedented showing of community support, Albany banned fracking last year. It was then vetoed by Mayor 1% Jennings (yes, the one who evicted Occupy Albany). After two NYS Supreme Court judges ruled in favor of municipal zoning rights in other locales, the Albany ban is being introduced once more. Come stand with the Environmental Sustainability Working Group tonight!

MONDAY | March 19 | 6pm | Albany City Hall, 24 Eagle Street

#OCCUPYnewscorp

Enjoy an early morning action at the office of the parent company of Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post. Despite making $8.65 billion in profits from 2008-2010, News Corps pays less tax than a family of four making $58k. In 2011 alone, they spent $7 million on lobbyists, $35.6 million on accountants, and $2.9 million in contributions to political candidates. Together with VOCAL-NY, we will engage in direct action at the NYS Capitol followed by a teach-in in the War Room challenging the role of corporate influence over our political process. Meet at the Washington Avenue entrance to the Capitol at 9:30.

TUESDAY | March 20 | 9:30am | NYS Capitol Building

Matewan

Set in 1920's West Virginia, Matewandepicts the struggle of miners as they attempt to organize and defend themselves against the exploitative and heavy-handed Stone Mountain Coal Company. The film touches not only on the hardships of early labor organizers as they fought for unionization, but also explores issues of race, infighting within social movements, and the autonomy-stripping nature of capitalism. Film showing begins at 8pm, followed by discussion.
